Students need to be supported in an environment that enables them to learn according to their ability. Students with intellectual disabilities must not be segregated into 'special classrooms' away from the general student population. Students with intellectual disabilities need the equal opportunity to engage in post-secondary education or other available skills development opportunities.
Historically, education was not considered necessary for children with disabilities, especially those with intellectual disabilities. Yet it is the right of every child in Canada to receive an education in the regular school system and to be supported in an environment that enables them to learn according to their ability. Students are entitled to an inclusive education, in settings with same-age peers and to have individualized supports to enable them to learn. Students with intellectual disabilities need the equal opportunity to engage in post-secondary education or other available skills development opportunities.
Diversity, social acceptance, altruism, empathy, understanding - these are some of the benefits experienced by students, with and without disabilities, who learn in an inclusive setting.

People First of Manitoba is located on Treaty 1 territory, the original lands of Anishinaabeg, Cree, Anisininew, Dakota, and Dene peoples, and on the homeland of the Métis Nation. We respect the Treaties that were made on these territories, we acknowledge the harms and mistakes of the past, and we dedicate ourselves to move forward in partnership with Indigenous communities in a spirit of reconciliation and collaboration.
